How often in movies is the sequel better than the first one? Not very often hey! But on our recent trip to Barcelona we knew we had to work extra hard to make it even better than our first weekend away in Berlin – and based on some of the great reviews we’ve received already, we’re definitely heading towards Godfather 2, The Dark Knight and Empire Strikes Back territory
So this time we quadrupled the numbers to 25 citysocializer members, swapped the snow for sun and made sure we had even more great socials organised in advance.
With members arriving from London, Manchester, Leeds and Bristol – we all decided to start our Thursday night out early by meeting at well known attraction and Barcelona must-see El Bosque de las fades (the Fairy Forest) before taking advantage of the warm Catalan night and heading to one of the many plazas for some tasty tapas and further opportunities to develop our taste for Estrella and Cava.
After a heavy night around the old town (with various reports emerging the next day of 2, 3 and even 6am finishes) the vast majority of our citysocializer group met for our pre-planned walking tour at 1pm. Starting out in the Las Ramblas area and finishing by the marina, we enjoyed 2 and half hours of history, culture, Barcelona oddities and everything in between from a really informative guide. As we soaked up the sights and the vitamin D under a cloudless sky it was easy to see how our guide had arrived on holiday in Barcelona 5 years ago and never gone home!
Friday night was the big one though – from cocktails to craft beer, live music to a pirate themed bar (aptly named Hook) we saw it all! It was a great opportunity to catch up with the guys who hadn’t made the walking tour and have a chat with members from other cities – just like the Catalonian’s it seems citysocializer members don’t need an excuse to have a damn good night out!
With everyone getting on so well Saturday was kept as a free day for members to organise their own Socials. For some it was visiting famous landmarks such as La Sagrada Familia and Parc Güell, for others a spot of shopping and more tapas was the order of the day. The evening consisted of members checking out seafood restaurants, Cuban bars and catching the Barcelona FC football match with the locals all accompanied by our (by now) good friend Estrella.
For a few lucky souls the weekend continued until Monday, but for the rest of us… well we reluctantly headed back to the airport ready to try and sneak a whole leg of Iberico ham through the ever stringent Ryan Air check in staff!
A special thanks has to go to our former Manchester host Claire who now lives in Barcelona and really helped us this weekend by hosting the Socials, showing us some great bars and restaurants and keeping the party going until the early hours!
So if you’ll excuse me going back to the movie analogies for a second – we’re really going to be trying to make this a successful trilogy of weekends away with more members, socials and food – glorious… Italian… food when we hit Rome between 25th and 27th April.
If you haven’t been on one of our weekends before then now’s the time to get involved and join us and of course if you’ve been on our previous ones, you know you’re really not going to want to miss this one!
What our members said:
Had a great weekend, met some nice people and we even had a resident tourguide, Claire, to show us the hotspots.
Thanks for a great time!
