citysocializer Travel: our weekend in Athens

Community News

After the runaway success of our April Rome trip which combined high culture with great food and night life, it was decided that we’d do it all again by visiting the capital of the ancient world Athens this October.

A slightly smaller group than usual made the trip over from the UK to escape the ever increasingly colder autumn weather and we were kindly rewarded with temperatures that averaged 25 degrees and blue skies over looking all the famous sights and sea.

After meeting for our usual Thursday night meet and greet, we had a few drinks in the main Acropolis district, before heading up the road to grab a quick bite and talk over our plans for the coming days ahead.

With Friday morning being left to everyone to make their own plans, we either shopped in the famous flea markets, explored some initial historical sights or took a load off by dropping in for a well deserved Greek coffee (super strong) in one of the many roadside cafes.

By the afternoon we all met up for our now obligatory citysocializer weekend free walking tour and over 3 hours, our guide Paul took us on an exciting and informative visit of all the main sights such as Hadrian’s Arch, Temple of Zeus and the Olympic parks. It was safe to say our feet could do with a rest after so much walking so after a well deserved chill out it was on to dinner where we enjoyed some great meze plates while being given a free large bottle of local Raki firewater, duly polished off of course so we didn’t offend…

Saturday was an early start and all about the museums, with a trip up to the top of the Parthenon – truly one of the must see places in each of our lifetimes and after another full day of culture, culture culture it was time to head into the cool and underground Gazi district of the city. Great bars, great food and an underground vibe that was relaxed and informal, a trip to Gazi was one of the best decisions we made and one I’d highly recommend if you’re ever in Athens.

And then unfortunately it was Sunday and time for me to head home. Luckily 3 of our group were staying a bit longer and headed to the coast and beach for an extra dose of R&R, but I’m sure everyone will agree that it was another great citysocializer trip away.
