You want to know why Everybody’s Talking About Jamie? We’re here to tell you. Last month we ran a contest for 10 free tickets to see the new award winning musical sensation at the Apollo theatre. The winners were selected and informed and the day came to see the play.
While we were having predrinks at Jewel bar near the theatre, Jamie’s true story, first shown at the 2011 BBC documentary Jamie: Drag Queen At 16, came up in conversation. The story follows Jamie Campbell who wished to be a drag queen and all the adversity he had to face chasing his dream and becoming Fifi La True.
The documentary has now inspired the brand new West End musical Everybody’s Talking About Jamie, which is bringing in the awards one after the other. On top of being nominated for five Olivier Awards, including Best New Musical, it has won 3 WhatsOnStage Awards – Best New Musical, Best Actor in a Musical for John McCrea in the title role and Best Actress in a Musical for Lucie Shorthouse, for her portrayal of Jamie’s best friend, Pritti Pasha.
Needless to say we were all excited to watch the play and we were not disappointed. From start to finish, the entire cast was full of energy, their incredible vocals filling the room and pulling us into the story. We were right there rooting for Jamie taking his first steps in his brand new high heels, getting heartbroken at his father’s harsh comments and understanding his mother’s struggle to do what’s best for her son. Jamie’s character was a baby bird afraid to take his first flight and seeing him overcoming the difficulties of his life and finally soaring was truly magical.
The supporting characters were not just there to stand in the background. They had their moments and their solos and told us what was important to them. There is a moment when Pritti tells Jamie that she’s there for him but he hasn’t ever asked about her and what her dreams are. His drag queen name in the musical might have been Mimi Me and everyone might be talking about him, but he learns that the other people in his life are important and he cares for them.
At the end of the play, the citysocializer members agreed that they loved the musical and it is definitely a must see. From the brilliant vocals and the beautiful songs to the creative staging and the fun costumes, there is no wonder why Everybody’s Talking About Jamie.
