The best places to celebrate Chinese New Year in the UK

Things to do

Chinese New Year is one of the most vibrant and flamboyant festivals in the calendar and to welcome in the year of the snake. citysocializer have compiled the best of the big community celebrations going on this weekend. Check out what’s happening in your city and join the festivities.

Liverpool homes the largest Chinese arch outside of Asia, so it’s no surprise there is set to be one of the biggest parties around it kicking off from 11am. Make sure you get down early or you’ll miss the Dragon, Unicorn & Lion Street Parade.

It’s one of the biggest annual events in Manchester city center and you can expect a day of performance, street markets, art and craft workshops and traditional Chinese art.  The highlight however is set to be the firework display, which kicks off at 6pm in Chinatown.

It’s an even earlier start in London with a parade through Trafalgar Square and Chinatown from 10am. The dotting of the eye ceremony is not to be missed and takes place on the main stage in Trafalgar Square. Plus, of course, more spectacular fireworks once the sun goes down.

-       If that wasn’t enough we’re also excited to hear Paul Potts will be performing.

The highlights in Nottingham include rock performances, martial arts, dragon boats, kung fu and tai chi workshops. Nottingham city council promise a great day out for everyone so we’re sure they wont disappoint.

We’re most excited for the Chinese zodiac, calligraphy, foods, card, calendar making, and fortune telling that will be taking place in the Chinese Centre, but the city will also be filled with music, Chinese costumes and the traditional dance which takes place from 12.30.

If you fancy taking part in the celebrations why not create your own Chinese New Year Social and see whose free to join or check out whose celebrating in your city.
